Several Hayate episodes were released recently and as I was constantly raving and ranting about how awesome Isumi is I thought that she would be perfect to do a character profile of. She really is simply amazing. She’s easily my favorite character in Hayate no Gotoku. Truly I always say that the best parts of an episode are the scenes she’s in; she truly does need her own spin-off. She really is an amazing mix of cute and air headed. It’s a bit hard to explain her character type. I almost want to say shy, as she is a bit soft-spoken and certainly isn’t as outgoing as say Sakuya, yet its not like she continually hides or anything. It’s more like she’s just really quiet. Still, she manages to be hilarious and cute at the same time.

I of course have to talk about her biggest “charm point” would be the fact that she continuously gets lost at the easiest of traveling. Now, getting lost isn’t a completely new and unique factor to Isumi, there have been plenty of situations in anime where someone gets lost and even some minor things like a particular character always getting lost when perhaps they take a car ride somewhere far away. However I don’t know any anime character or anime that utilized it to the extent it is with Isumi. It’s absolutely hilarious when she gets lost. Although it has pretty much been the same joke throughout the series it still really manages to be funny each time mainly because they don’ spend too much time focusing on it and it’s to such an amazingly huge degree. Taking a walk in your own garden and getting lost to the point of being at the other end of the country, walking to the bathroom and winding up in the middle of the city, it’s really hilarious to me.

Aside form the getting lost part there are plenty of other adorable things that Isumi just does naturally. The way she views life kind of innocently is fun to see. One scene from a recent anime episode comes to mind where she is floating on a box and stretching her arm out with a stick waving it back and forth futilely at a shark. It was incredibly cute to see. However while she has this amazing adorable point to her she also seems to have this amazing spiritual power. She’s shown in the OP as defeating some monsters/spirits with some charms and there are several episodes where she has pulled out a charm and totally kicked ass.

It’s me again, Xeby-chan! Well summer time is here so this gives me more time to be free. I’ll be doing more posts over the summer when Xebek has time to go crazy, so I present to you one of the posts that I do, another character profile. I wanted to do this for Setsuna back when KyoSora just ended, but never had the time, so I decided to do it now anyways. I’ll do more of these and then other kinds soon, so look forward to it :D

Thoughts:

Setsuna is an interesting character, and one that got my attention enough that I just had to do one of the Character Profile about her, even though KyoSora ended a while ago. The show, Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora was…interesting. It was fun and interesting to watch, but not the best. However, I can honestly say that the most interesting part of the entire series to me was Setsuna. She wasn’t even really one of the main characters. Although she was very important, it’s not like the was THE female lead, that role going to Kuu. Setsuna still managed to make enough of an impact as a secondary character to have me just fall in love with her. Setsuna was definitely my favorite character in this anime by far. Hell, she’s probably one of the reasons kept watching, I wanted to find out what happened to her because of her situation. Now, I didn’t like her solely for her looks or anything like that, it wasn’t really her looks at all. She was such a more interesting character then that. It was her situation that made her so damn interesting and captivating. Here she was, completely devoting her entire life to Kyoshiro. She knew all along that he was trying to destroy all of the absolute angels, yet she still continued to follow Kyoshiro and was basically as she describes his sword and nothing more. She cared so much for him that she helped him lead to her eventual death, so she thought. Then, Kuu comes along. Setsuna has been completely devoting herself to Kyoshiro, Kyoshiro is her life. Then Kuu comes along and steals away any hope she has for a relationship. However, Setsuna was just happy being near Kyoshiro, it’s not so much that Kuu took that chance away, just that now Kyoshiro cared for her and didn’t pay any attention to her. Hell, Kyoshiro even treated her like complete crap. She was begging, hurt and almost dieing once and begging for Kyoshiro to help her and he basically blew her off to run over and see if Kuu was ok, after she risked her life to save the both of them. I thought her situation was expertly describing a couple of times, that Setsuna gave everything for an empty future. It was descried that Setsuna gave her everything for Kyoshiro, all of it JUST to spend time with him however the time wielded nothing for her. Despite the ending, she is still my favorite character. As I’ve said above, the ending is very confusing so I’m not sure EXACTLY what happened, but Setsuna still lost it seems. So she remained a tragic character, which is a bit fitting but sad.

As for information about Setsuna herself, she’s also known as Setsuna of the Moment of Dreams and is the Absolute Angel Claiomh Solais. Setsuna’s Absolute Angel symbol is located on her right arm, the dominate weapon arm of her mecha self. As for information about Claiomh Solais, it is the name of Setsuna’s mecha and Absolute Angel self. Claiomh Solais is also known as the Sword of Light. It is from Irish mythology, and it was a sword that came from Findias and belonged to Nuada Airgeadlamh or Nuada of the Silver Hand. (This also explains why Setsuna’s mecha has one dominate hand) The sword had the power to cut its enemies in half and is one of the four treasures of Ireland. Her mecha has a cool backstory, and I personally think it is the coolest looking one of them. The loli’s seems too odd, it doesn’t look like a good mecha, and Kuu’s looks just weird. Setsuna and Kaon’s are the only ones that look normal, and I think Setsuna’s one huge dominate arm looks cool on her mecha, and really does fit nicely with the whole theme of her being someone’s sword. Plus it fits with the mythology of her angel’s name.

In overvieew, Setsuna had it all. She was a great example of how interesting a character can be without having to have over the top character traits. Really, there wasn’t anything too distinguishable about her character that made her special. She wasn’t super funny or over the top, she’s not some shy clichéd girl like many characters from other anime or anything like that. She was a beautiful character, but her greatness didn’t come form her looks. She had just this great tragedy to her character and she had such an interesting story to her, causing her to be interesting and tragic throughout whatever she did, and overall very unique. Even though she didn’t get an ending focusing on her, it was still interesting and a rather good closure for her, just because of how well they handled her character. Her ending was a bit odd and slightly confusing but it was still fun and a good ending just because of who she was.

Thoughts:

Mai is really a great character. Although, I think that it’s mostly obvious from the fact that I’m doing a post on her. However, really I think one of the things that makes Mai such a fun character to watch is how she is part of a certain cliché and genre, but also different. There is plenty of reason why she is an interesting character, form a serious perspective. Things like her background and back-story. She has plenty of serious stuff that makes her a great actual character, but I’ll talk about that later. Really, the one thing that I love about her is how funny of a character she really is and just very fu to watch. It’s almost odd to say that she is fun to watch, because at first glance she is a very shy closed up person. How can someone who hardly talks or has anything to do with other people be funny and enjoyable to watch? However, it’s not so much being shy that defines her character, it’s a bit because of her apathetic-ness. Events like just blandly stating things, times when she just goes along with stuff without second guess, even if normal people don’t go along with things like that. When Yuuichi jokes that they are meeting for a secret love affair and she just says nothing, it turns a normal situation that another anime may have where the girl reacts in embarrassment or surprise, freaking out, Mai says nothing and causes the effect on Yuuichi. Just ordinarily thing seem really cute when Mai does it. Normally if a person said Honey Bear and Furry Racoon or whatever it was for yes and no, it wouldn’t be as funny. It would still have some humor there just because its odd, but he way Mai say s it with no emotion, but still goes along with saying something like that instead of yes and no makes it just great.

Of course, Mai also is a great character because of the serious aspects of her character. Having her first and only friend, who befriended her when she felt like a freak and that she was hated by all. He comes around and then when he leaves she wants to believe the lie is real, making the demons. It’s rather tragic just from her characters start, but then she appears as closed off, which could be part of the trauma before. Then dealing with the demons, hurting herself as she continually strives for years for her old friend, then having to learn the truth and have it be that basically she has been causing pain to all those around her, then trying to kill herself. She really has a very interesting story, everything combined – tragic past, supernatural powers, loosing those close to her, and so on.

In the flashback to Mai’s past, when she was with her mother, was very very cute. Not just the fact that she herself was cute, because of course almost all anime, girl, characters when at that age will end up being shown as cute. But her actions and just everything about hat event was so touching and cute. The way she made hundreds of sow bunnies so it could feel like her and her mother were at the zoo, my god, I almost cried. Mai has a great back-story and past and while what was going to happen to her mother was tragic and sad, yet the way Mai tried to help out was so god damn cute. Then of course things turn out to be fine because of her powers, but still it was a touching story and very cute still.

Thoughts:

Never has attempted suicide been this hilarious. Although not a usual thing for someone to make a comedy bit out of, Sayoko handles this fairly serious topic and makes it hilarious. At least in the beginning of the manga and maybe anime, it’s been a long time since I’ve watched the anime; she would try and hang herself daily. However the rope always broke and she would just lie on the ground looking pathetic. Even when Asami kind of got worried about it and Sayoko said she would stop, there was a whole bit where she would approach the noose and start shaking like she was going though withdraw because she wasn’t trying it.

Sayoko is one of my favorite characters just because of how pathetically lazy she always is. It’s to a degree that transcends normal laziness, its inspiring in a non inspiring way…kind of… Anyways, I love how completely apathetic she is. I remember once when she was supposed to be doing work and fell asleep, then when Asami came home and she woke up and sat up and pretended to work like she had been working all along, even though Asami saw her asleep and saw her get up. The way she just is always spacing out with a blank look on her face is hilarious. Although she is adult she has a very childish personality and always seems to easily get in distress.

I love the way Sayoko is frequently on her knees and begging for various things, scratching with her hands like a cat or something. She is just so pathetic that it’s charming. Not only that, but there are several instances where she would eat someone else’s food, and then when questioned about it would just remain silent, like she usually is, and completely ignores the topic that was brought up about who ate the food.

Although Sayoko is for the most part completely lazy and apathetic, begging people for things and looking really pathetic and useless she does have a really strong side to. There was one instance when her parents confronted her about remarrying and giving up Asami. She completely stood up for herself giving this riveting speech about how she loved her previous husband and wouldn’t move on to just forget him, and how Asami was her daughter, blood relation or not. That was really rather surprising, and although it would seem a bit out of character I don’t think it necessarily is because although for the most part she seems to not care, she does about things that are important.

Another point that shows how awesome Sayoko is that she is incredibly talented. Despite being an incredibly depressed and lazy woman, she has incredible talent as shown in her wood carving. I don’t exactly remember this from the anime, but in the manga at least they showed how basically she saw someone wood carving once, so he gave her a bloc of wood and a knife and right away she made a just amazing sculpture of Asami. Then as seen in one of the manga scans below she kind of took that and went overboard, but it was a kind of re occurring thing showing that she is good at it, not only at making Asami but once making a crab and so on. Also, she is an extremely talented violinist, as was shown once when she stood in for someone at a school concert.

Thoughts:

First off she is damn cute. Most people seem to agree on that at least, and if you don’t well then I don’t really care what a brain dead idiot thinks :D Ok, vicious fanboyism aside she is cute. They haven’t shown it in the new anime yet but when she pulls her hair back in a small pony tail thing in the back she looks even cuter because you see her face but still get that long bangs thing in front. Her whole shyness thing defiantly adds to her cuteness. She defiantly has some moe aspect to her, and so not only is she cute, but she is shy which like, amplifies her cuteness.

Nodoka is also pretty damn smart, and is very likely one of t he smartest girls in all of the series. Although technically I would say the girl who made a fully functional robot and A.I. Operating System for this robot may be equally if not smarter, but Nodoka defiantly holds her own. Just because she is in the library Club isn’t what makes her smart, hell Yue is in that club and she is a Baka Ranger which means she is one of the five stupidest girls in the class. Nodoka seems smart in her own way, but not just book smart. She was able to figure some stuff out, and isn’t super gullible. She stood up and took charge. Although she is shy which adds to her cuteness, she is very brave sometimes as she took charge in trying to help Negi and didn’t just say back and cower.

One thing that makes Nodoka is awesome, is how kick ass she is and how great her abilities are. Her pactio powers are surpassed by none! Basically her power is that she can create and use a book that sees into the future. That is likely one of the best powers that anyone could possibly have. Seeing into the future, you could do so many things with that ability it’s not even funny. Not only that, but her book also gives general information, such as where someone is. I know that at least in the manga she could basically ask the book where so and so was and it would show a picture of them and information about where they are and what is going to happen to them in the future. Also, basically the book’s other main feature is that it can read the thoughts of anyone…HELLO!? That again has got to be one of the most powerful abilities anyone can have. Ptth, screw some sword swinging bitch, forget Asuna Negi and make Nodoka your permanent partner, enough with these temporary ones, Nodoka’s book kicks ass which makes her kick ass.

Oh, I want to make a note that technically since she has a given birthday of 1988 she is not a loli anymore so it’s fine to be…obsessed with her and such…

I’m not going to say how often I’ll post these because I’m lazy and won’t stick to whatever I say, and it will likely be inspired by certain episodes of seeing that character.
