I’m not sure exactly what to think about this show. Not whether or not I like it, don’t get me wrong, that’s not what I’m pondering. The thing about this show is that there are so many things going on at the same time, yet all of them are interesting, all of them connect and relate to each other. In this show it’s hard to tell what to focus on, what to view this show as. Is it a show about learning who you are? How you became who you are now and if you really are at heart the same innocent child-like self you were? Is it about overcoming the death of a friend and mourning/moving on with your life? Is it about reconnecting with lost friends, reclaiming a part of childhood that is important? Is it something else? The answer of course is “Yesâ€, and that’s why I love this show so much.
I have to say Menma’s mom is definitely an odd one and I’m not sure what to think of her. At first, she was just a little off. She’s been talking to the shrine, giving it food, that seems to go a bit beyond normal but it was kind of creepy almost and bizarre when she mocked Yadomi and the others for doing things for her. If she was just very sad, still, about Menma’s death the normal thing I would think would to be happy her friends are doing this in her memory. But for her to say that…it just seems a bit odd so I’m sure we’ll see some more from her, I’m just not sure to what degree.
I’m quite impressed with Yadomi’s character development. He showed a lot of courage helping out Anjou when everyone was paying attention to her in class about the love hotel incident. He could have remained being invisible. Being unnoticed, invisible, is what he did before all this seemed to happen. Not going to school, being isolated he kept to himself. Even though he was at school he could have continued being invisible but he did this stupid embarrassing thing to help out a friend. Then later, when they were working together, the same thing happens where he makes Anjou laugh and forget the bad things that are happening.
The big looming question here though is what is this “wish†Menma wants, does she actually have one, will she go away, and why she is there in the first place. Right now they seem focused on this rocket they are trying to build, which is a good start but there are some heavy hints at something more serious that Menma wanted to talk to Yukiatsu and Tsurumi about that could be it. However there is the high probability that its none of these things, that there is no magic wish that needs to be granted and something else is at play. We don’t know why Menma is there, or what she is. There’s still the possibility that Yadomi is actually effectively going crazy in some way. Now, some things point against this such as the apparent physical interaction Menma has had with things before, but it brings into question what she’s doing there, why she appeared, and so on.
However, bottom line I’m not sure it should matter. This show, to really succeed, needs to be about the five characters except Menma. No bringing Menma back, nothing like that. She needs to stay dead. The show needs to be about these friends reconnecting, becoming better people, being true to themselves like they once were when Menma was around. I have high hopes for that. That’s not to say they can’t focus on Menma, but at the core of the show there needs to be that something else.
