White Album – 13 [Final]

The concerts begin and Touya gets a chance to speak with Yuki.

Impressions:

This was a pretty decent episode to finish off the series with for now. Probably was one of the better ones since Touya was a stronger character and didn’t actually say that much. It wasn’t bad to focus on the concerts and see how the girls did. I will give Yuki some credit since it was a nice song and she did a good job pulling it together. Rina deserves the most praise with putting up a hard performance and then dashing all the way to the Arena to give that group a special show. I’d be surprised if she isn’t bruised from that car ride. That definitely can’t be a safe way to travel.

If Akira wants to be with Misaki he needs to smarten up fast. Going around being grumpy whenever Touya is mentioned is not an appealing quality. He can be jealous that Misaki liked Touya before he got together with her but this is going overboard. I mean he had little chance when he was a nice guy. Acting like a jerk now is not going to help keep Misaki with him very long. Touya is far from a perfect person, but it makes Akira look like a far worse person with his behaviour. Destroying Haruka’s bike like that is just the icing on the cake for him in this episode.

I’d like to say Haruka really overreacted to Mana being at Touya’s. Yet considering how he got the girl inside his home I’m not sure Haruka was going too far. You can tell that he doesn’t have bad intentions and yet he makes it look terrible. Cupping her cheeks like that and getting the girl all embarrassed. Mana hasn’t been a bad character and all wrapped up like that did make her pretty cute. Now if only she could figure out that the idol Yuki is actually the Yuki Touya is dating. It would make things so much easier if that pun was finally let go of.

Anyways Haruka’s reaction is tough to gauge for me. On one hand she is overreacting to the whole thing. She should try to have more faith since she made it sound like something was going on between Touya and Mana. Yet Touya has been involved with Yayoi so its not really a wrong thing to think. Haruka seems to reacting more like someone who wants a relationship than someone that is concerned about what a friend is doing.

Still this was probably one of Touya’s better episodes. The guy finally stood up and took some action at long last. Shutting down Yayoi was a great thing since he should have done that the first time and every time she tried something. He is with Yuki and should make sure to follow that. It just felt like he was more proactive than usual. It really is amazing how these things just end up flocking to Touya. The guy seems like a magnet for events to come at him. Still I’m hoping that Yuki saying she loved him will inspire the guy enough to fight to be with her.

I am a bit worried about Touya’s dad. The guy has shown some hints that he might have some real problems. Hopefully he’s not in critical condition.

Final Words:

To be clear I’m calling it my final words since the show is done for now. It is coming back in the fall, but for now White Album is done.

When I picked this series I did have some expectations. With older characters it did seem like we could get a more mature story. Relationships have definitely been at the head of this show. Yet there have been some difficult moments along the way. There are only a handful of characters I care that much about. It makes it really tough when the protagonist Touya isn’t that likable a guy for me. At first I felt a little ambivalent toward him. Yet as time went on his actions got more annoying to me and I really didn’t like him at certain points. Rina was really the only thing that kept me going.

Personally I’ll enjoy having a season between this and the second half. This series has been a little tough to watch. I don’t mind putting some thoughts into a series while watching it. Yet at this point I’m not sure that ending up with Touya is what I want for the characters I like. Touya really isn’t much of a prize to me, but he makes things happen.

So for now I’ll let this show rest.
