.hack//Link Pre-Release Thoughts

As you may or may not know I’m a big .hack fan. I realize the faults the games have and all but I really do love the series as a whole, the way things connect and the bigger picture between the various installments. Anyways, I have a whole expose on what I like about .hack in general, but this post here is about the newest installment that has been revealed, .hack//Link.

.hack//Link will be a game for the PSP which like many other .hack installments has a manga counterpart. The game takes place three years after G.U. Apparently it has a heavy focus on the real world as well as the game world. It centers on a new character, but also gives Kite, Haseo, BlackRose, Tsukasa and Subaru heavy roles.

The most interesting and promising part of this is the connection of various installments. Although there is a new main character from the very synopsis reveals the main character running into Kite and Haseo and Tsukasa playing main roles. This is a far different level then simply one character being affected by the results of another, here we have the characters actually interacting and it should prove very interesting.

I am worried that they are going to be trying too hard to fit all this stuff in. First off, it’s a PSP game and its only one game. Now, while the PS2 games could have been consolidated into fewer, if they were to be consolidated it would be one hell of a long epic story and game. A game this short isn’t likely to have the kind of epic feel to the story. Plus it seems a slight of a stretch to have all these characters shoved into one game, and it’s likely to suffer because of trying to achieve such high goals.

In conclusion, I don’t expect this to make everyone who dislikes .hack to love it, and I don’t expect it’s to be the best .hack game either. However, it seems to have a heavy emphasis on connecting various installments, which is very promising. I know the previous games aren’t the best, but there is something about the franchise that appeals to me and I’m very excited about this

I agree with you completely. I am also a .hack fan who won’t try to brag about it to anyone. Given that they say this is the last installment of .hack series, being an psp game make me feel even more sad. I really hope they will change their mind.

Well definitely pretty interested in this. Will agree that I just had issues with the earlier instalments due to how they tried to sell it. I mean splitting it into multiple games just felt like an attempt to get the maximum amount of cash. Especially the first series of games where everything was virtually the same except the story continued. I can handle sequels but it just felt like they had the whole thing done and were holding parts back. You could have made them into one game and it probably would have been liked more. It would have been epic story that’s for sure.

Enough ranting about the old .hack games. I loved the story and playing them, just that minor issue gets to me sometimes. Still willing to go into this game with a fresh mind. PSP does make me worry a bit since only so much you can fit into it. There is some nice potential here with the linking of characters so here’s hoping it turns out well.
