Tales of the Abyss – 11

In a return to Keterburg the past of Jade and his great mistake is revealed.

Impressions:

This was definitely a necessary episode if only so we can get a better understanding of Jade and even Dist. Kind of a surprise to see the personality we are shown now and how it compares to his behaviour as a child. Jade really was a genius and if it wasn’t for that Fon Slot Seal he would still be owning quite a few of the enemies that the group is running into. You can really see the difference in the thoughts of Jade compared to other people. Some may just go and fix the original doll and others would just get a new one. But Jade decided to simply make a copy of the original and solve the problem that way. Now that’s not a real problem as it is, but his abilities and thinking did lead to a tragic accident. A sad thing to cause the death of someone you admired especially when it happened due to you going beyond your abilities. He was talented in so many areas but like many obsessed with what he couldn’t do. The Seventh Fonon was just something Jade couldn’t handle like he could others. Can understand why his sister would be worried about him. The first thought of Jade was to simply make a replica of the professor instead of freaking out about her dying. It’s a good thing the Emperor gave him a shot to the face since he may have destroyed himself obsessed with creating a replica of Neblilim.

Also shines a light on Dist’s past and shows he’s not just a dark villain. Kind of feel for the guy since he really was a misfit as a kid. Jade was just the type of guy that was far cooler and Dist really didn’t match up the same. Though I guess that Jade doesn’t dislike Dist to the same degree he says he does. But can see how the both of them had to be hit hard by the death of Professor Nebilim. She was someone who they could both look up to really and for different reasons. In the end they both ended up going in different directions with Jade being taken into the Curtis family and Dist joining the God Generals. Surprised Dist was the one who worked on Anise’s Tokunaga (doll on her back). But considering he did it after she talked to him it shouldn’t be a great surprise. Dist is the type that doesn’t make friends easily and would respond quite positively to anyone who made him feel some acceptance. We still have to remember that people with good in them can still do some terrible things. After all Dist was part of the replicating of Luke and is also willingly helping Van with his goals. Guess we’ll see if the guy can be taken off the path he is on and what his own goals are.

Think this episode was also important if only for Luke to start being accepted by the group more. Showing his kindness a bit more openly now in comparison to how he wouldn’t show it much. Though at the same time when praised like that by Ion he’ll still respond in the same manner. At the very least this episode was important for Jade accepting the change in Luke. Think also Natalia is slowly dealing with who Luke and Asch are. After seeing someone in a certain way for so long it would certainly be tough to just deal with the change at the drop of a hat. Still think at the end of the day she’ll have a better friendship with Luke because she isn’t trying to make him into someone he isn’t.

Don’t think Nephry has anything to worry about in terms of Jade. Obviously she hasn’t seen him much with him avoiding that city like a plague. But he has learned from his mistakes and is likely feeling a great deal of guilt when looking at these events. If he hadn’t created fomicry in the first place a lot of events may have gone differently. Lives touched negatively by fomicry wouldn’t have been hurt the same way. But in the end all you can do is shoulder your guilt and move forward. Jade can’t change what he did in the past but can try to stop others from making similar mistakes.

This was a good episode in how it shed light on the past of Jade and Dist. Look forward to seeing the Emperor in the next episode. After all anyone who Jade admits to being a friend has to be a fairly interesting character. Also we can’t forget that there is a serious situation going on still. They have to move quickly to stop a war from breaking out and try to deal with Van before he acts as well. Many things will occur in the episodes that are to come.

From what everyone was saying, I expected a lot of angst on Luke’s part, but it looks like he regained [or gained, whichever way you look at it] more trust than he ever did, contrary to Tear’s statement. It also looks like his orders are being followed.

I hope this doesn’t become a ‘tragedy of the week’ story with Tear last time and Jade this time. No TearXLuke moments either :-(

Well there could be more angst later since Luke still has to deal with his place in the world. But think getting trust back wasn’t nearly as tough as Tear was putting it. Because Luke isn’t so cocky as he used to be people aren’t going to react badly to him naturally. Guess it shows its all about how you give orders. Sadly it took the annihilation of a city for Luke’s personality to shift a bit.

Well probably won’t be a tragedy of the week kind of thing. Though oddly I can see what you mean by that. Last few weeks really have been tragic overall. Akzeriuth, Asch, Tear, and now Jade. Lot of these characters have some unhappy pasts to look at. Still the story is moving forward again so don’t think we’ll be delving into character pasts for a while.
