Minami-ke Okawari - Final Impressions

I absolutely loved this series. I was a big fan of the first season and I remember being quite a bit worried going into this one. There was a lot of uncertainty with this series because it was really unclear on what the hell it was, some kind of remake of the first season, a sequel but with a different company, so on and so forth. Even if it wasn’t a remake and was indeed a sequel like it turned out to be I was afraid that a change in animation and the company doing it might change the way they handled the humor or the jokes too much. However in the end it turned out fine. Although if I really had to choose I’d probably favor the first season over this one it’s not because this one is bad. It was a lot of fun to watch, the same kind of great humor the first season had.

I do have to mention Makoto/Mako for a bit. I would say that his parts in this season/series was definitely one of the higher points. It seems like they focused on him a LOT more then in the first season. Now, that is easily explained by the fact he didn’t take on Mako until the middle or so of the first season so they had the entire series to work with him. Regardless, his parts always made me laugh. I still remember just holding onto my sides, literally, laughing at the bit where he was making Valentine’s chocolates and said he was going to give it to Makoto. They definitely dealt with his character in a great way, really making it one of the best parts of the show.

It could’ve been so much more - there were episodes where it felt like the premise or jokes got wasted (the Hayami Juice Ep, anything with Fuyuki in it, any Hosaka episode which didn’t have him imagining something creepy). What they DID do was make Mako-chan and Fujioka prettier, to the point where Mako-chan was so completely broken that I half expected him to drop the pretense of being Makoto and get a girl’s uniform and stuff at school.
