Clannad - 12

Kotomi freaks out when she sees a bus crash that everyone thought Ryou was on, but even though she is fine it triggers bad memories for Kotomi.

Impressions:

Wow, this episode was huge. They really piled on the serious development for Kotomi’s situation. I wasn’t really sure at all what it was going to be about before this episode. I was quite surprised when they showed that Tomoya knew her from when they were kids, but considering this is a Key game adaptation it felt very familiar. She’s like a swordless Mai. I’m really curious as to where things are going to go from here because even though this episode had a lot of development, it didn’t necessarily paint out the exact road things were going to go, it just gave us a lot of new information. It was also pretty surprising to see Fuko. I didn’t think we would see her anywhere near this soon. I was pretty sure we’d see her again, and I did think that when she reappeared there wouldn’t be any real memories of their time together, just like it turned out, but I didn’t think it would be this early. It was very fun to see and I hope she appears again even if it’s nothing big or important. I do have to say I loved the Kanon reference with the giant stuffed anteater. It wasn’t anything important, but it was fun to see.

One of the things that really caught my attention about this episode was the talk of these alternate dimensions or worlds. This show has already shown that it could easily have supernatural things about it just like Kanon did. The talk about these dimensions could very well be real. I actually don’t really think it will be restricted to Kotomi’s arc. They may talk about it to develop the story about her parents but I think it will have other implications as well, such as with the girl and the robot. They said before something about that world already having ended and it could be some kind of alternate world that perhaps Tomoyo is involved in, just because she’s the girl who I don’t really see a clear path for her arc. Plus, she’s got long hair like the girl. It could be something completely different, but I do think that there is a good chance of this talk about alternate worlds having implications beyond Kotomi’s arc.

I’m really curious as to what the talk of Kotomi studying abroad will turn out. Usually I’m against characters moving away, studying abroad, and so on because for the most part it means they are going to be leaving all these character they’ve spent quite a bit of time developing relationships with. Although that character may still be developed, and the friends of that character, those friendships that they spent a good part of the series exploring are kind of thrown away. However I’m not too sure I see Kotomi leaving as a sad ending. I’m not sure how it would work in the game, whether or not Kotomi leaving would be her ending with Tomoya or if it would be the other ending but that doesn’t necessarily apply to the anime given KyoAni has shown with Kanon that they kind of want to keep happy endings for the girls who don’t end up with the main guy even if it didn’t work that way in the game. I can see it going either way, on one hand it may be sad for her to leave everything considering the improvements she’s made to make friends, but it may be good considering the deal with her parents, perhaps something about continuing their research or something, which may be the kind of closure she needs. It will be interesting but that is something the preview only briefly mentioned but really got me thinking.

Your screenshots have rich color. o.o

I assumed the girl in the other world was an alternate Nagisa, since she had brown hair. And since Nagisa is likely the last girl in the series, the other-world stuff can be drawn out over all 26 (52?) episodes.

If Kotomi does leave the country, she might made an appearance via email or something, since Fuuko made a useless-but-hilarious reappearance here with some abuse of her astral projection powers.

The whole serious part of the episode from the bus scene on made me really interested in Kotomi’s character; it will be a long three weeks until the next ep. But, shamefully, while I wonder about her past and her parents and that fire, I still can’t get over all the breast jokes .. what with Kyou molesting her in ep11 and the infamous hug-from-behind trick in this ep.

Another great Kotomi episode. I didn’t really think too deeply into Okazaki’s girl in the other world until this episode. We’ll see how the other world stuff pans out in the near future.

Fuko’s guest appearance was also hilarious. She just sort of willed herself back into existence all for the sake of starfish.

I’m sitting on the edge of my seat to see the past history between Okazaki and Kotomi. Key male leads have a track record of having bad memories it seems.

Honestly was a shot I didn’t see coming with Fuko popping back into existence for a few moments. Even without the memories there is still that familiar chemistry with Tomoya. Making that big show and just going after the star :).

Some heavy stuff this week. But was a bit worried about Ryou. Curious about Kyou’s statement about her knowing if something had happened to Ryou. Since with this kind of series you can’t always play it off as a bond between sisters kind of thing. Since there has to be something with them that is outside of the norm.

Surprise with Kotomi’s parents. Who would have guessed she was living in that place all alone. First spending all her time in a library then at her house…Thought she had a bad relationship with them but this is pretty bad. Seems like that guy isn’t such a bad person. But being involved with her parents and that research she probably would have him in her mind as a bad person.

Always has to be a case of memory loss eh. So there was a connection when they were young between Tomoya and Kotomi. Really want to find out what happened then. At any rate looks like Tomoya will be cutting class for a while to restore that garden to its former state. Probably things centering around the birthday.
