Sky Girls - 20

Takumi finds a roll of film in the ships storage room and decides to go around taking the crew’s pictures.

Impressions:

This episode was alright, it really wasn’t all that interesting or exciting. For the most part this show hasn’t done well. It just seems like way too many things are dragged out and they have so many episodes that are rather boring and uneventful. They have improved a bit with the introduction of Aisha, as she is weird enough to bring some interesting things into the show, but even this episode that took place after she was introduced didn’t really help. It was still mostly fluff. It’s a bit more disappointing then some of the other fluff episodes because it kind of seemed like last episode actually introduced a plot into this show. More then just destroying these random creatures that appear, they made it kind of interesting but still have yet to deal with it at all. Really for the most part this show hasn’t done well and it’s pretty much at the point of no return in becoming a great show, its average with too many fluff episodes. Even the non plot episodes don’t feature enough on character development to be good, even if they aren’t necessarily “fluff”

The next episode seems to involve the Vic Viper again. I’m not really a huge fan of the thing. It seems like the show is really solely about the Sonic Divers and the little story they’ve introduced would really only work as well with hem. It seems kind of wrong for some other random jet to just fly in and destroy everything when they’ve spent more then half of the season slowly building up tiny bits of interesting into the suits. Not to say anything about the jet itself, I don’t really care, but to have so much of the show focus on the Sonic Divers and then to just have this thing swoop in kind of seems stupid.

Yeah… I don’t know how much *influence* Konami has on the show, but it seems to be more of a “hey how about you guys put in the ship from our Gradius games” than anything else. Then again those shootemups are way more popular in Japan than they are elsewhere, so maybe folks love seeing the Vic Viper the way we’d love seeing a [decently done] Batman make appearances in something like CSI or whatever. Maybe. I like Bats too much to want him appearing in a rubbish crime show but I guess it can’t hurt.

The Vic Viper’s not supposed to be some military mass-production jet from Earth, though… it’s not an F-22. It’s a culmination of all the technology the planet Gradius had to offer, used to fight off a planetary threat which ultimately destroyed the planet afaik. Its companion ship the Road (or Lord) British Space Destroyer was likewise built as the ultimate defense for the planet Latis. So.. as a Gradius fan I have mixed feelings about the Vic Viper in this show. Also the pilot is a bit of a douche but ‘evs.

I agree that the show just isn’t well done. At all. If it weren’t for the art quality, I probably wouldn’t give it a minute of my time. This is a show that can easily be condensed to a 12-episode series given how little they’ve actually managed to come up with that’s *worth sitting through.* That’s really my issue. I don’t need plot progression as long as there’s something interesting going on. And with Sky Girls it seems even the plot progression is so uninspired that I’m just like “mehhhh” every time they reveal another piece to their really unoriginal puzzle.
