ef - a tale of memories - 05

Renji tries to help Chihiro with writing her story as Kei confronts her feelings for Hiro and the jealousy over Miya’s involvement with him.

Impressions:

This episode was great. It didn’t really have any extremely high drama situations in it, but at the same time it was really interesting all the way though. I’m just continually amazed at how the show is connecting all these stories together while at the same time having them really be their own story. They connect everything, and at the same time it’s not just a story with one main character, hell nearly everyone is a “main” character. I think things will definitely get even more interesting when some of these connections are confronted and there becomes a conflict between two different stories. Really Chihiro and Renji almost seem the most separate from anyone. Sure Chihiro has ties to other characters but for the most part the story of Chihiro and Renji is rather isolated. The other stories seem to be more tightly woven tighter, such as Hiro, Miya, Kei, and Kyosuke. It’s a weird love polygon with them and it will be interesting to see how much of those four characters is one story and how much it breaks into two. Although Kyosuke is interested in Kei, both Kei and Miya are interested in Hiro. I just get the feeling that because of Miya’s I don’t care about school attitude she knows that there may not be a point in the future. Characters how act like that generally do so because their future doesn’t lead anywhere, why bother with school. That’s not necessarily what I want but it seems to fit. Still, although I love Miya I felt so sorry for Kei in this episode that I want her to end up with Hiro right now, but the way this show goes that could easily change. I just think that because of the feelings, the whole conflict about trying to take Hiro for herself causing Chihiro’s accident, everything like that there feelings would be a bit wasted if she ended up with Kyosuke, but who knows, he could only want her of the movie anyways, but I doubt it doesn’t go beyond that.

I found the whole metaphor thing with Chihiro to be fascinating. Although they originally set it up as a kind of math problem, really looking at it I don’t think the same math applies to Chihiro, it goes beyond that. It could have had something to do with how long Chihiro has, but if it does it means she’ll be over 144 years old easily, so that’s not it, it doesn’t have anything to do with the equation for finding the area of the circle. Still, the concept of her being chained to a post, the chain being 12 years, how old she was for the accident, and her arm being 13 hours, the length she can reach outside the circle, was just interesting. I don’t really know what it means or if it actually has any connection to what the character development and plot will become but it’s just an interesting view on how time and life works. I am a bit worried about the whole starving to death thing, but again that doesn’t make any sense because if you look at the math it would give Chihiro plenty of time.
