Yuuichi recounts the rest of the day when he first met Ayu seven years ago, and when he runs into her while out shopping with Akiko she heads home and helps him unpack where Ayu and Makoto meet.

Impressions:
This is the first episode that deviates from the original story pace. Its not that it has different or new content really, it’s just that Yuuichi meeting Mai was at the end of episode three and here at the end of four he met her in the school. I think they did a good job of making this episode useful. It wasn’t just filler, as it gave a great description of Yuuichi’s past as we’ll as some character development. Although they didn’t give any new information that the other series didn’t have, they kind of expanded on it. For the most part, this episode was about character advancement, which is one of the things that kanon is all about. This episdoe did a great job of showing a bit about Nayuki and what she is involved with, it showed Makoto’s mischcivious nature a lot more then they had before, and even a bit of Ayu.
Speaking of character development I’m defiantly liking Makoto a lot better in the new series. In the old one they didn’t do that much with her; however I constantly feel just entertained by watching her. She defiantly has a bigger role and they are showing her more which is really nice. As she is a cute girl but at the same time very mischievous and fun to watch.
After one or two Mai episodes which are coming up next becasue of the preview, I think we will see a lot more of these kinds of episodes. Although deviating from the pace of the original sereis, as I said before they aren’t filler. I never said these were filler, they give a lot of character development and advancement and in Kanon the plot is heavily focused on having the characters established. It’s not even so much as the new content is just stuff from the game they left out, moreover it is expanding on what was already there.
Spoiler:
The thing that I really noticed in this episode was Akiko’s reaction to meeting Ayu. They showed this in the old series, so it was really cool to see here. Akiko is obviously old enough to remember the events of seven years ago. However someone Yuuichi and Nayuki’s age, not accounting any memory suppression form the traumatic event, are still not likely to remember Ayu’s fall. However I defiantly think that Akiko does, as she seemed quite confused and shocked at hearing Ayu’s name.
I thought it was interesting to see how Makoto acted when Ayu arrived at the house. I think she really did show some of the mannerisms of a fox, the way she shyly peaked around the corner, and was very shy. Although it could be that she was just shy but she seemed like a bit more energetic of a person for everyone else. It just seems like the way she peeked around the corner very fox like.
How do you know it was a filler? I know the old anime left out a lot of things from the game, so maybe this episode was just taking some material from that.
The shot of Makoto mannin’ up to eat that stuff is kawaii bomb! She is very playful, in a mischievious way; its fun.
I didn’t say it was a filler. I said distinctivily it wasn’t a filler. I said that this deviates fromt he pace of the original anime yet wsn’t filler becuase of how much usefull information it had to the character development.
I added a paragraph explaining better what I mean, but I never meant to say this was a filler, just that it is the first episode to deviate from the pace of the first series.
Toei’s version was faster paced because they only had 13 episodes to work with. A lot of the game’s content got cramped or overlapped in order to squeeze most of the important details inside. Due to this, only Ayu’s story was fleshed out in full. It can be said that Toei’s version is solely Ayu’s path with four supporting girls.
On its’ own, Toei’s version is still a very good anime, because they avoided the pitfall of trying to throw everything in, and chose to focus mainly on Ayu’s path.
KyoAni’s version has the advantage in that it is 24 episodes long. With a much longer timeline to play with, KyoAni is going for the ambitious path of merging the full content of all five girls into one complete, integrated storyline.
The first three episodes seem similar to Toei’s version because it is the common path. The introduction stage so to speak. Henceforth, things will deviate more and more from Toei’s version, but adapt from the game more faithfully.
Time will tell if they succeed in doing so.
Cheers.
