Kanon - 13 [Final]

Yuuichi is scheduled to leave town to live with his mom after Akiko’s accident even though she is recovering, leaving him with little time to patch things up between him and Nayuki.

Summary:

  • We find out that Akiko is doing just fine and is rehabilitating in the hospital. It has been a month since the accident but Nayuki and Yuuichi are still subtly avoiding each other.
  • At school, it’s the graduation day and Yuuichi gives Sayuri and Mai a bouquet of flowers congratulating them. He meets up with Kaori and Shiori and Shiori is saying how she is all better now, and asks Yuuichi if next year he will make a snowman with her. Yuuichi tells them how he will be transferring, because of the accident his mom wants him to live with her.
  • That evening, Nayuki is at the hospital with Akiko and Akiko asks if it is really ok that Yuuichi is leaving. She kind of says how she knows about Nayuki’s feelings for Yuuichi and tells her that there is nothing to be embarrassed about, that she needs to be true to her feelings.
  • Yuuichi answers the door to find Kaori, Shiori, and Kita at his door. They are there for a farewell party that Nayuki invited them to. After the party, Yuuichi heads to the hospital to visit Akiko alone while Nayuki still stays behind. Akiko just says some things to him about how love is needed for life. Even if it may not bear fruit, it is nourishment for living. Referring to Nayuki’s feelings and how even if they don’t get together, she needs that to be able to be herself.
  • The next morning Nayuki heads to the hospital while Yuuichi goes to his train to leave. Before leaving he hears a message Nayuki recorded saying how she is sorry, but she is ok now, she is fine with Yuuichi not being hers but will always love him.
  • Nayuki is at the hospital when she sees the nameplate on a door nearby her mom’s room, Tsukimiya Ayu. She runs to meet up with Yuuichi before he leaves, and tells him that someone is waiting at the hospital someone who has been waiting for seven years. He is surprised but says what about her. Nayuki kisses Yuuichi. She says that is the first and last time, she is ok now.
  • Yuuichi runs to the hospital and opens the door to Ayu’s room. We see later Ayu sitting on a bench and Yuuichi meeting up with her, making fun of her haircut she got after her long hair from her comma. We see Yuuichi in her room, giving her the hair band telling her to wake up and she does. Ayu and Yuuichi continue to talk, smiling and laughing at each other.

Impressions:

Overall I think the ending was good mainly because of how they dealt with Nayuki. They can easily get the whole Ayu and Yuuichi thing, but if it wasn’t’ for the Nayuki closure it would have left the show with a much more bitter final feel to it. I think the whole Nayuki coming to terms with Yuuichi’s feelings for Ayu and realizing that things are fine as they are was great. I loved the kiss between them, and Yuuichi’s reaction. Although the kiss didn’t’ lead to anywhere romantic it showed that Nayuki still has feelings for Yuuichi, but is willing to forget about them and come to terms with everything.

One thing that kind of amazes me is how easily this could have turned into a Nayuki ending. I mean, they wouldn’t have had to change anything except the last half of the last episode for it to EASILY fit perfectly into a Nayuki ending. I mean, they just never show that Ayu is still alive, let you think she is dead, and Nayuki and Yuuichi patch things up and realize their feelings, and everything is fine. Not that the Ayu ending didn’t fit, it just could have easily gone Nayuki’s way and I wouldn’t have hated it if it did.

I thought the whole scene at the end with Ayu’s hair was hilarious. Not just her haircut or anything, but the whole part with Ayu asking all innocent and cute like if Yuuichi will laugh, Yuuichi saying confidently he wont laugh but then bursting into laughter. I loved that part.

Final Words:

The main thing that really brought Kanon down is everything that they upgraded to for the remake. The animation and how short the series was. Aside from that, which is being fixed for the remake, I loved Kanon which is why I’m looking forward to the remake so much.

Overall Kanon really did surprise me (the fist time I watched it) I remember. I was thinking that some show with only 13 episodes about some guy who forgot his past would be boring. He would just regain his memories in the end and that would be that. I think the main thing that first surprised about Kanon was the amount of supernatural stuff in it. I mean, we get Mai and her creating monsters and defeating them, Makoto a fox turned human, Shiori will an illness that was cured by willpower (ok this one not so much supernatural as just a bit odd) and most of all a ghost of Ayu while the real her is in some comma.

The main thing I love about Kanon has to be the characters and just the overall relationship deal they had going on between Yuuichi, Ayu, and Nayuki. I think they showed amazing how Nayuki’s feelings were in regards to Ayu, even saying how she was glad she was dead in a way. I think it really brought a depth to this series. On a lighter note, just all the other characters combined were great. There was a lot of comedy mixed in with this series, and some of it almost just stemmed from the way the characters were, Mai being all anti-social, Ayu’s taiyaki stealing and trying to justify it, and so on.

In summation, Kanon was a great series that I thoroughly enjoyed even watching a second time. The characters, comedy, and overall plot dealing with the characters feelings were all great and I can’t wait till the remake.
