Makoto comes down with an illness that worsens and worsens, while Yuuichi tries to find out what’s wrong he learns about Makoto’s bizarre past.

Summary:
- In the evening, everyone is sitting down eating dinner but Makoto seems to be having problems, and eventually collapses on the ground. They take her to her room and as they call a doctor, Makoto slumbers out of the house. Yuuichi goes to find her and finds her on the hill she went before.
- Yuuichi picks Makoto up to go home when the girl who saw them at school approaches him saying he shouldn’t get involved with that girl, for it will only bring him sadness. Yuuichi just says he isn’t going to let some stranger tell him what to do and goes off.
- At school, Yuuichi talks to that girl and she tells him that Makoto is a fox. That according to a “myth” there were foxes born on that hill and they had special powers. Yuuichi doesn’t believe her but she says how it’s not a myth, in order to become human the fox must sacrifice two things, memory and life.
- That evening at home, Makoto is still in bed and Yuuichi reads her a story. The remembers how he used to have a pet fox but still finds it hard to believe that Makoto is some reincarnation of that fox he had as a pet. Then, after unbuttoning Makoto’s shirt for her as she is extremely weak, he notices a scar on her chest, one just like the fox had.
- Yuuichi tells Amino, the girl from school, about how he believes her. He asks why Makoto would come back if it meant dieing, if she hates him that much. She says she was probably just lonely.
- Yuuichi spends a lot of time with Makoto to make her happy, the only thing he can do. They take her out to a restaurant and Yuuichi chooses today to be Makoto’s birthday as she doesn’t really have one. Then they all take a picture together in a booth and eventually head home.
- Makoto’s condition worsens and eventually after explaining to Akiko and Nayuki about what Makoto is, he takes her off to the hill as she can no longer talk or really do anything. He carries her all the way there, talking to her, and when he gets there she disappears into light and fades off, leaving Yuuichi.
Impressions:
This episode was pretty sad. I mean, I still think the Shiori episode was sadder but this one actually had a sad ending. In the Shiori one, at least for now, she is fine, but in this one it seems like Makoto is gone for sure.
They only touched on the whole Amino thing a little bit, which was odd. They never said for certain why she knew all this stuff about Makoto, and if she had a fox turned human herself once, although that was what they seemed to be hinting at. They could have at least said that and I don’t think it really would have taken away form things but as long as you don’t question where she got this knowledge it doesn’t really make that big of a difference.
Spoilers:
The ending of the Makoto arc still surprises me in a couple of ways. First off it is the only arc that ends without an entirely happy ending. I mean, Shiori lives, Ayu comes back, Nayuki is cured, Mai becomes…sane, everything is all fine except for Makoto. It’s not until Kazahana that we get a small clue that she comes back. In the actual series itself there is none of her coming back, and certainly nothing at the end of the arc, which was this episode.
Now all that is left in the series is the Ayu arc. Although Nayuki’s bit is in there too, Nayuki for the most part doesn’t even get her own arc. She kind of has a tiny one inside the Ayu arc. From the preview it is defiantly confirmed that they are going to start on the whole Ayu deal, as it seemed kind of odd Ayu hasn’t even been in the last three episodes, except for like a two second shot of her.
