Ah! My Goddess 2nd Season - 16

Belldandy and Keiichi find out about the situation with Demon Urd and Goddess Urd, and they work out a way to fuse them together when they find out that if Demon Urd continues to use her powers, she will self destruct, killing her and Goddess Urd.

Summary:

  • Belldandy runs outside, crying from seeing Urd kiss Keiichi. When Urd is about to seal Belldandy Skuld and Goddess Urd appear and then Skuld explains how Marller split them, that that one is Demon Urd. Demon Urd tries to mix her and Goddess Urd up but Skuld marked Goddess one so they find out which is which.
  • Demon Urd sets out to destroy Belldandy and Keiichi, and Belldandy says how they can’t destroy Demon Urd, because she is still their sister. Goddess Urd steps in the way saying how they may not be able to destroy her, but she wont let her destroy them either. The two of them fight for a while, but Goddess Urd notices how Keiichi and Skuld are caught in the cross fire, and is having a hard time attacking and protecting them. Eventually however when Demon Urd is about to let loose all her power she collapses in pain. Belldandy seems to know what’s going on but is unable to speak. Marller swoops in and takes her away.
  • Belldandy tries to tell everyone that Demon Urd will go berserk and her powers will self destruct. Light can’t exist without darkness so that means both Urds will die. Goddess Urd says she knows something and asks Belldandy to nod her head. Everyone finds out this information, we find out Belldandy can’t speak it because it touches on some subject. Basically, soon Demon Urd will go boom, making Goddess Urd go poof.
  • Goddess Urd flies away, trying to find Demon Urd and make her use her power so she self destructs and doesn’t destroy everything, willing to die for the cause. They find each other and fight, Goddess Urd trying to make Demon Urd use up her power. Eventually when she is shot down, Belldandy saves her as they went looking for her. Skuld tells her how she won’t let her die; she will fuse both of them together, and tells her of her plan.
  • Goddess Urd lures Demon Urd to a spot and after some traps spring, Demon Urd is caught by Skuld’s trap and she fuses the two of them together. When it is over everything seems alright but Urd still has a slight personality disorder, the bodies were fused but the personalities still exist separate in the body, arguing with each other.

Impressions:

Wow, I was amazed by this episode. It’s hard to explain it, but it had a feel to it that was a little bit different then normal but was perfect. One thing I noticed that just blew me away was the music. Now, this isn’t a show that I think super highly of the music. Not that I hate it or anything, it’s just never been something memorable. However, the BGM that was playing the background of this episode just blew me away. It was amazing and fit the scene perfectly.

The whole Urd deal has seemed to be a continuing point of conflict. I mean, in the last season the major final problem resulted from Urd and the fact that she was half demon half goddess, and here we had a two part episode that dealt with it as well. I just wonder if we will ever see more o that, if the final problem in this season will be along the same lines. The thing is that it’s hard to tell if it’s getting old or not. It’s not a bad plot line that they use, if they can come up with a new way of explaining the dilemma I think it will be fairly good. After all if Urd ever became evil in her own body she would easily be able to destroy everything and use that power, since the only reason she didn’t in this episode is because evil Urd was in a fake body.

Skuld’s determination in this episode was really neat to see I thought. It showed, even if subtly that she can be fairly mature and really does care about Skuld. Just her taking charge saying how they will fix everything really showed a good side to her character.

The whole split personality thing after Urd was fixed was a bit surprising, and I wonder if they will continue to have that through the series. I had thought everything would just, even if temporarily, go back to normal but it seems like the whole both personalities in the one body was a lasting thing. I suppose they could fix it between the episodes, it was kind of funny seeing that, just wondering what they will do about it for the next episode.

Urd’s mother in the next episode, as we saw from preview, seems to be…interesting. It wouldn’t be what I thought her mother would be like, considering she was the demon side that made Urd and it seems like she is the leader of the demons, she seemed to be all cheerful and affectionate. Well, if Shuffle has taught me anything it’s that demon doesn’t mean evil.

The good thing about this series, and with the Second Season specifically, is that the makers of the anime are cherry picking the best stories from the original manga. Although Bandai has taken liberties with the some of the continuity and plots, and added other elements, overall they have done an excellent job.

The First Season of Ah My Goddess was there to introduce the characters. This led to the show be a slow starter. You don’t know how many times during the previews for the first 6 episode of Season One that I wished for Urd to finally show up!

However, they have now hit their stride. Bring on the Third Season!
