Utawarerumono - 21

Kunnekamun’s attack on countries continues until they eventually go to war with everyone to unite all the countries through war.

Summary:

We start off seeing a bunch of the mecha Avu Kammu attacking some villagers, killing dozens of people. Before them is a man begging for them to stop and show mercy. He asks them to kill just him as it is his fault, apparently being the leader. The Avu Kammu continue to slaughter everyone and the long haired guy in one of the suits says evilly that he will let him live, let him live a long life of knowing he caused the deaths of all these people. Word gets back to Hakuoro that that small country that attacked Kunnekamun has been completely destroyed, despite Urutorii’s attempts at a peace talk. Back at Kunnekamun, the blue haired guy stands before Kuuya with some other subjects around. She asks him why he did such an act, why he annihilated the country when they had no power to fight on. He just recites her words, “Needless mercy only results in more conflicts” He says everything he did was for her. Kuuya looks upset but says that since she said something like that she understands his reasoning and we find out his name is Hauenkua. Kuuya says the matter is closed and there is no fault. Just then one of the subjects, Hein, steps forward and asks if this is the time to unify all nations to prevent conflicts. Hauenkua says it like he means conquering them but Hein keeps saying unifying and conquering are different. They start arguing and Genjimaru comes in telling them to sot p this in front of the emperor. Kuuya seems happy to se h imp and asks him what he thinks. Genjimaru just says now is the time to strengthen their borders rather then unify them, much to Hauenkua’s dislike. Back in Tusukuru, we see Hakuoro walking around just watching everyone. We see Aruruu and Kamyu playing, Oboro and Touka sparring, and Kurou teaching soldiers and training them. Eruruu comes up and Hakuoro says how he is a happy man isn’t he? All of a sudden Benawi comes up to him and tells him how two other countries have started an advance of Kunnekamun. Hakuoro asks stunned, asking why, they know their power. Benawi just says they must have thought together they could take them down. We see a battlefield, several Avu Kammu standing before hundreds of slaughtered bodies. Kuuya gets out of hers and looks around, and covers her mouth being sick at this sight, saying to herself how this is the cost of war. We see some dozen people from the village all bowing down asking for mercy. They say how they don’t want a part in this war; they want to join with them so the nations can be unified. Genjimaru who is there just says they will strengthen their borders first and they beg for mercy still, and we see Hauenkua in his suit smiling evilly.

Hakuoro is sitting with everyone. Oboro asks if this means, the news of what’s happening, that another war is coming. Hakuoro just says they don’t know that yet. Eventually their meeting is interrupted by Eruruu and Hakuoro tells everyone that’s enough for now. Hakuoro goes with Eruruu to talk with Kuuya. At first they just talk about the moon, how it is different from the sun because its light is soft and embraces you. Hakuoro brings up the subject about the war and everything. He tells her not to try to do anything herself, that everyone has to rely on others for support. Kuuya asks if that person is Eruruu for Hakuoro and he says yes, but then (stupidly) says that everyone like Eruruu, Benawi, and so on give him his support. He says she has people too, like Genjimaru and Sakuya; she should rely on them for support when she needs it. Kuuya thanks him, saying how she had almost forgotten she wasn’t alone in this world. The two of them go their separate ways. Later, we see some villagers being killed by soldiers on horseback. Kuuya is told by Hauenkua that one of their villages has been razed to the ground because of the war they are in. Hein jumps in saying how now is the time to unify everyone, that fortifying their borders will not bring back the people who died to day. She isn’t sure what to do and then a messenger comes in saying how another village has been razed to the ground. Kuuya eventually says, based on her own judgment, that they cannot allow this to go on any further. She will unify all the countries into one. Back in Tusukuru, word has reached everyone. Oboro yells that Kunnekamun has declared war. Hakuoro tells Touka and Kurou to go fortify the east countryside. We see the Avu Kammu going from country to country, slaughtering hundreds of people, just wiping out everyone and spreading throughout all the countries. One night Kuuya, Genjimaru, Sakuya, Hein, and Hauenkua are sitting in a tent talking. They say how they should target the Onkami next (winged people). They say that eventually they will have to and they need to get it out of the way. Genjimaru objects saying how they are the protector of all the people and of their god, if they attack them they will make enemies with everyone and it will separate them. Kuuya says how they are already separated from everyone and orders the attack for tomorrow. When Hein and Hauenkua leave, Genjimaru asks what about his friendship, if she is going to throw that away. Kuuya says that she will just obtain it again.

The Avu Kammu start their advance on the Onkami. They all look at this through some viewing portal. They say how the only way to bring about peace is to stop them. They start chanting a spell and several stone spires arise around where the Avu Kammu are. They all stop in the middle of the circle instead of walking out of it and the spell continues. All of a sudden it starts glowing and all the Avu Kammu are forced to the ground, being crushed by excess gravity. We see in the chamber however the unnamed winged guy comes in. All of a sudden the force on the Avu Kammu stops and there is an explosion of power in the chamber where the Onkami were. The winged guy emerges from the shadows and the leader of the Onkami who is the only one conscious addresses him as Dii, saying he didn’t’ know he was still alive. He says no, even you couldn’t do something like this. He just says Koroaika which surprises him. He seems horrified in surprise. Outside, the Avu Kammu all gather up saying how they have finished off the rest of the Onkami. They say all that is left is…and Kuuya interrupts saying ring Tusukuru’s emperor to her. Word gets back to Hakuoro that the Onkami have been defeated. Kamyu gets word of this and cries in Urutorii’s arms. She just says she is sure father is alive. Eventually, the archer twins give word to Hakuoro that Kunnekamun have begun their advance through Tusukuru. Hakuoro asks about Touka and Kurou, who were in the area they are attacking. They say they have begun their retreat while trying to flank the enemy. Hakuoro tells everyone that resistance will only increase casualties, and tells everyone to evacuate the capitol. Hakuoro tires to say he will stay behind to help them escape but Benawi objects saying he must escape. Urutorii says he is right, as long as they have him they can regroup later. The remaining soldiers all stand in front of the gate leading to the capital to slow them down while the peasants evacuate, standing up against he Avu Kammu that bear down upon them.

Impressions:

Wow, things are defiantly escalading to what they will be for the final conflict of this series it looks like. The question is though when or how Hakuoro will unleash his beast like thing. My guess is something they do n the attack will spark him and he will be able to destroy the enemy, but that leaves the question of what Kuuya’s part will be and what the deal with Kamyu is. Also if Eruruu be the one to stop him and bring him back or what, or if they have to kill Hakuoro but he agrees it’s the best thing to do or something similar to that.

I still want to know what exactly is up with Dii, the winged guy. It’s basically because of him that all the Avu Kammu weren’t defeated right then and there. He seems to me to be almost like some contract killer, because Yue had him and now he is working for Kunnekamun, he seems to just go all over doing what is needed for those specific countries. He seems to have some kind of past that will likely be important because the leader of the Onkami saw him and was surprised he was alive so there has to be some history there with him. How important of a role he will continue to play is unsure, he isn’t even known to Hakuoro or anything.
