School Rumble 2nd Season - 21

A parody episode featuring the adventures of Magical Girl Mai as she tries to save the Masked Kamen and compete with her rival Magical Girl Tenma.

Summary:

We start off hearing how some blue rose has the power of when placed behind the ear of the one you love, it will make that love come true. We then see a different opening, one where Mai, a girl from the same class as everyone, is a magical girl. We get a fairly full opening with her in her magical costume and poses of it and so forth. We then see Mai waking up in her bed, seemingly normal. She says however there is a secret in her family. We see her mom and dad, who are Lala and Tougo. She says how they are the king and queen of the magical world and she is a magical girl. Then we see a flying cat, Iori, that talks to Mai. She hands her the blue rose that will make whoever she loves love her back and the cat tells her to use it on whoever she wants. She rushes off somewhere and the cat follows her asking who she is going to give the rose too. She says that’s obviously, the Masked Kamen, however she doesn’t know how to find him. Just then she sees some kids bullying another kid so she transforms and tries to stop them, even though they make fun of her for being too old to be a magical girl. They eventually run off and suddenly a letter comes flying by her. She looks up and we see Tenma in some wonder woman like costume flying above, with a much more glamorous figure then in reality and a small fairly flying next to her, Yakumo. She says how she was told to deliver that message too her. Mai reads the letter and finds out that the Masked Kamen is being held prisoner by some evil villain who seems to be played by Harima. She says how this saves her the trouble of finding him. She thinks about how she is getting rather old for being a magical girl, and the cat says if her life continues this way she is going to be an old grandma before she finds love. She says she must go and save him and give him the rose, and rushes off.

Mai makes her way to the Evil Cartoon King’s castle. She looks from behind some rocks at the front gate and wonders if it’s a trap. Akira appears behind her saying of course it’s a trap, and continues to say some things about how she needs courage if she is to fulfill what she is doing and so forth. She claps her hands saying they have two new customers and some huge giant men come and take Main and Iori away. They find themselves in some dungeon on a conveyor belt going past a bunch of weapons and torturing tools, Iori saying how things kind of stuff doesn’t belong in Shoujo. We then see the Masked Kamen tied up and laying before The Evil Cartoon King. The Masked Kamen asks why he is doing this, how even though he set a trap for Mai there is still Magical Girl Tenma. He tense up and says how two magical girls is enough for one city. The Masked Kamen asks if he is doing this for Tenma, and if he has told her his feelings. The Evil Cartoon King just kind of sighs in depression saying how she is mesmerized by another. Back with Mai, she just ran into Karasuma. Karasuma tells her how he designed this castle, but designed it like it should be with no useless traps, a structure that can withstand things like earthquakes, and so on. She asks if there is an escape route from the dungeon place they are in and the two of them break out, fighting the guards along the way until they arrive in the room where the Masked Kamen is. She says how she is glad to see him but The Cartoon King shows up and we see he is basically just wearing a loin cloth. Mai says how he should put more on and he just spouts some crap about how this is the sign of real men, and we see some rather disturbing camera angles and Mai yells not to do that. The cartoon King grabs Masked Kamen and just then Tenma appears at the door. She says how she went to take care of the other side but, and then sees Karasuma there and kind of fawns over him, but sees Mai and freaks out asking why she is there. Mai asks if she is on their side now. Karasuma says to her that her outfit is beautiful and Mai gets annoyed she seems to be ignoring her. The Cartoon King sees Tenma with Karasuma like that and holding onto Masked Kamen jumps up to the roof saying to Mai to come get him.

Mai arrives at the roof where Cartoon King is waiting. She tells him to release Masked Kamen and he says sure, if she gives up her magical powers. She seems stunned and he tries too persuade her saying how she has always looked for an out, how she is getting too old for this. She remembers back to the kids and how they said she was too old. She seems to really be thinking about it but the Masked Kamen yells at her not to give up. He says how it’s great, the tight clothing on a high school girl. Cartoon King kind of looks back at him saying how he is a pervert. Mai says she won’t give up and the two of them start fighting. Cartoon King wins though, holding Mai up by her neck with his…loin cloth. She apologizes to masked Kamen for not salving him and sheds a tear. Cartoon King sees this and lets them go; saying to her she can see she too isn’t good at showing her feelings. She thanks him and takes the rose and prepares to give it to Masked Kamen, but ends up sticking the stem in the hole of the ear, not putting it behind it like a pen. Kamen screams and falls down and Iori yells and asks what she is doing, she could have killed him, she is supposed to put it like a pen. Mai freaks out, saying she didn’t know but Masked Kamen is alright. Cartoon King tells Mai how if she relies on those things then the love won’t be real. Masked Kamen says to Mai how its ok, he knows her feelings now but can’t return them, for as long as he wears this mask he must protect others He walks away and Mai asks to see his face. He starts to remove the mask and his face and body bulge out and we see it is the fat pervert guy who then crashes through the roof.

We see a quick thing with the badly drawn basketball players. Everyone is on the ground except the main character and they also give him inspiration to make a final super technique. He thinks he has won but then the other team turns out to be robots. They all assemble together like some power rangers thing and make a huge robot, with the basket on its chest and some girl being held hostage. All the good guys come too and attack this robot but it has some shield. The girl starts to glow and says she will take care of the barrier. Then with the help of his friends the man guy makes a basket and defeats them and everything is fine, when they are greeted by an ominous figure that challenges them….

Impressions:

For the most part this episode was again hilarious. Although this had a little bit of a different focus then the last episode. Last episode was basically parodies and side stories just like this one, but this one (with the exception of the basketball thing) was all focused on the same story of Magical Mai. It was kind of neat how they brought that back because there was a small like two minute thing in an earlier episode when they were deciding what to do for the school play this was brought up just didn’t do much. Although there were some rather disturbing points in this episode like the camera angles of Harima in the loin cloth, it was pretty funny I thought and was a neat thing they did. Tenma in her outfit and her breasts falling down because they were fake was hilarious too. I wouldn’t want the rest of the series to be like this, and from the previous it looks like things will be retuning to normal.

As for the basketball thing at the end, I understand the whole thing that it’s supposed to be like that, where it is cheesy and pointless but this time it almost seemed a little much. I didn’t’ mind it as much when they first had it in one of the basketball episodes a while back, but this one seemed to overdo it and I almost wanted to just skip it, its like its been done already and we get it, if they just continue it now it will get rather annoying because its basically the same thing.
