We get Kyo coming to terms with what reality is and about being alive after Mei Yu shows him the reality of the ruins of where he has been thought to be living.

Summary:

We see Kyo floating in some water, wondering where he is. He looks to his side to see he is in an aquarium, looking at himself and Kaminagi. Some visions then flash of the scene from the first episode where he was fighting on the moon and disappeared. Kyo swims to the surface and appears in the Oceanus somewhere. He looks at everything and says to himself how he guesses he does belong in this world, and wonders out loud what this feeling is. The white haired pilot comes over and says he is sure he will get over it. The white haired guy continues to the bridge where Shizuno and the commander are. They ask if Kyo is able to fight but someone says how he needs to come to terms more with reality and such. Meanwhile, Kyo is walking around and sees Chris and Arque embracing each other. Kyo interrupts them and asks if he has met them before. Chris says they have but Kyo says he doesn’t remember it. Kyo just continues around feeling lonely wondering about things. He is called to the bridge and the commander says how he needs to learn about what reality is. Mei Yu, the pink haired girl who was from Shanghai and made a deal when the server was destroyed is to take him out because only someone who has lost something like her can show Kyo what reality really is. The two of them head out in the Altair and go to the ruins of Maihama. Mei Yu shows him around the city and they stop at a place and Kyo gets out. Mei Yu says she has to show him something underground. Kyo is teleported there and Mei Yu tells him to head forward down an underground hallway. As he continues he sees some corpses on the ground and watching him from the Altair she says not to close his eyes this is reality no matter how cruel it is. Kyo keeps continuing until he reaches a machine and Mei Yu tells him it is the Maihama server. Himself, his friends, his home, his town are all in there. Kyo returns back to the Altair after seeing that and seems pissed off at Mei Yu when she keeps pestering about it, but its only so he can learn what reality is and stop being so unsure. Kyo just tells her to shut up and teleports away leaving Mei Yu alone.

Just then some enemy mecha appear and Mei Yu can’t really do much fighting without another pilot so she tries to distract the enemy away so they don’t damage the Maihama server. Chris and Arque head out to fight the enemy while Kyo has teleported back to the fake world. Kyo wakes up in the infirmary at school after briefly watching the doctor and a teacher flirt. After they leave he gets up and acts really pissed that they were doing that, and kind of says to himself how they aren’t alive and they shouldn’t’ be involved in love and things like that, the same reaction he had seeing Chris and Arque. Kyo runs out of there and slams into one of his previous friends from the swim team. He asks what has been up with Kyo lately and not swimming. Kyo says he has basically given up and the friend says how that’s too bad, he wanted to swim again. Meanwhile everyone is still fighting against the enemy although they seem to have really good armor and they are unable to hurt them with lasers or melee attacks. Back with Kyo, him and his former friend talk and from talking with him he comes to the realization that he is alive. That his friend is alive, he is alive, Kaminagi, everyone is alive. He runs off and teleports back to the Altair and helps them fight. He comes up with a strategy and they are all able to beat the mechas. Back on the Oceanus they say how he finally understands but someone says how he has just accepted it, understanding is another matter.

Impressions:

Wow, we actually finally get some kind of acceptance to the whole reality thing. Kyo seems to have been dealing with the whole struggle between realties for a while and finally in this episode he kind of accepted things and said that even though their circumstances he was alive. Although Shizuno said that just because he accepts it, its a different thing then understanding it so we may still have this concept and focus later on in the series but probably not with the same impact as before with the whole purpose to everything.

I think we will again see some kind of drama or conflict between the relationship between Kyo and Kaminagi. Whether it is about the whole reality thing or just their feelings for each other. Although Shizuno seems like a more likely choice for which Kyo is to end up with, there will still have to some kind of resolution between the two of them. Also, although not in the same sense at all Kyo’s friend from this episode seemed to have a big part in him coming to terms with being alive and what reality is so I think he will continue to be in the series, and perhaps again at some time when there is some mental struggle offer some words that will spark a revelation or insight Kyo.

We didn’t’ learn really about Arque’s eye, even though it seemed to be kind of a cliff hanger of last episode. Although as other people have theorized it is kind of my guess as well that it is some kind of a data loss/corruption that she doesn’t have it and because of that is unstable, hence her kind of episode in last episode. My guess is because of this missing data the loss could perhaps spread because she is unstable and she could have like a limited time to exist compared to others. Hopefully they will touch on this subject some more in a future episode.
